The Diamond Heels scored three runs in the second inning and six in the fourth on their way to a 9-2 win against High Point at Boshamer Stadium Tuesday night.
Carolina’s nine runs came on just five hits, as UNC batters drew 10 total walks and three hit batsmen. No batter finished with multiple hits. The second-inning rally began with three consecutive one-out walks, after which Cooper Nicholson scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. After Carter French walked to load the bases again, Tyler Howe scored on a fielder’s choice and Lee Sowers on another wild pitch. The inning ended on a Gavin Gallaher flyout, the first ball of the inning to leave the infield.
UNC relied on more traditional scoring methods in the fourth, as a bases-loaded double from Colin Hynek drove in three to up the Carolina lead to 6-1. Erik Paulsen drove Hynek in with a single, and Nicholson brought Hynek home with a two-run blast to left field. Nicholson is the first UNC hitter this season to reach 10 home runs.
That run support was enough for seven Carolina pitchers, with Caden Glauber earning his fifth win of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Jackson Rose started and lasted 2.1 innings.
Tuesday’s win improves UNC to 34-7-1 on the season and 24-5-1 at Boshamer Stadium. Up next, Carolina returns to ACC play when it visits Duke for a three-game series beginning Thursday. First pitch of Thursday’s opening game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
