Chloe Humphrey scored seven goals for the second consecutive game as UNC beat No. 11 Clemson 12-9 on the road Wednesday night. It’s Carolina’s sixth consecutive win to begin the season and 28th in a row overall.
Humphrey’s seven goals tied a career high for the sophomore. She now has scored at least five goals in four consecutive games and has posted a hat trick in 24 of her 28 career collegiate appearances. She opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game, then scored three more goals in a span of 4:27 in the second quarter to give Carolina a 6-1 lead. One more Humphrey goal with 26 seconds left in the quarter staked the Tar Heels to an 8-2 lead at halftime.
Humphrey scored her seventh and final goal with 11:18 left on the clock, giving UNC a 12-6 lead. Clemson would cut into that deficit with two goals in less than a minute and another with 20 seconds left, but it was not enough to fully erase the Tar Heel advantage.
Outside of Humphrey, no other Tar Heel scored more than two goals. Humphrey was responsible for more than a third of her team’s total shots (12 of 35) and two of its six assists. Her 12 shots nearly equaled Clemson’s team total of 18.
UNC is now 6-0 overall and 4-0 in ACC play this season, with three of its wins coming against ranked foes. Up next, Carolina will host Pittsburgh at Dorrance Field Saturday at 11 a.m.
