UNC’s Nyla Harris, Nyla Brooks and Indya Nivar each earned all-conference recognition from the ACC Tuesday. Harris was the top vote-getter on the second team while Nivar was named to the All-Defensive team and Brooks was named to the All-Freshman team. Brooks also received votes for Sixth Player of the Year.
Harris, playing her lone season as a Tar Heel after transferring from Louisville in the offseason, reached double figures in 21 of UNC’s 31 regular-season games and 14 of UNC’s 18 ACC games. Against conference opponents, Harris averaged 12.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. She finished the season as the team’s most efficient shooter, posting a 57.6 percent clip from the floor.
In her final year in Chapel Hill, Nivar led Carolina in both assists and steals. She posted just the second triple-double in program history when she scored 13 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and recorded 10 steals against South Dakota State. Her 10 steals tied the program record for the most in a single game. Nivar finished the regular season with 120 total assists, becoming the first Tar Heel since the 2019-20 season to reach that mark. Her 79 total steals are the most by a Tar Heel in a single season since 2012-13. Nivar is also the first Tar Heel to earn an ACC All-Defensive Team nod since 2013.
Brooks, a five-star recruit in her freshman season, scored 15 points in her first collegiate game and then set a new season high with 21 points in a win at Wake Forest. She recorded eight games with five or more rebounds. Brooks is the fourth Tar Heel to earn All-Freshman honors in Banghart’s tenure in Chapel Hill.
Harris, Nivar, Brooks and the rest of the Tar Heels will open ACC Tournament play Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the No. 3 seed in the field. Carolina will face either No. 6 seed Virginia Tech, No. 11 Georgia Tech or No. 14 Florida State.
