UNC Lacrosse: Women Thump Ohio State and Louisville, Men Beat No. 13 Johns Hopkins

The UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams both picked up decisive home wins Friday at Dorrance Field, with the top-ranked women beating Ohio State 22-9 and the third-ranked men defeating No. 13 Johns Hopkins 17-9. The women’s team followed up its win against the Buckeyes with another blowout victory against Louisville Sunday.

In the first game Friday, the Carolina women raced out to a big early lead with six unanswered goals in the first quarter to break a 1-1 tie. UNC scored in bunches all day long, going on runs of 3-0 twice and then 8-0 later in the game to build its lead.

Chloe Humphrey registered her 21st career hat trick in 25 games with five goals on the day. She was one of four Tar Heels to score at least three goals, with Addison Pattillo and Eliza Osburn each scoring four. As a team, UNC outshot the Buckeyes 36-17 overall and held a 31-11 edge in shots on goal.

Later that evening, the men’s team took the field against visiting Johns Hopkins, with the Tar Heels looking to extend their own undefeated start to the season. Though the Blue Jays scored first, Carolina turned the score around quickly with three goals in a span of less than seven minutes in the first quarter, leading 3-1 after 15 minutes.

UNC led 6-3 with 1:28 remaining in the first half, but the Blue Jays hung tough, cutting that lead down to 8-7 midway through the third quarter. That’s when the Tar Heels hit the gas, using goals from Dominic Pietramala and freshman Anthony Raio to kickstart a 7-1 run. By the time Owen Duffy scored his second goal in less than two minutes to cap the run, Carolina had blown the game open and lead 15-8 with 8:36 remaining. The Tar Heels cruised from there.

Pietramala and Duffy combined for nine of the team’s 17 goals, and only two of Carolina’s goals were assisted. In the cage, freshman goalie Josh Marcus made a season high nine saves.

The Tar Heels are now 4-0 on the young season, with all four of those wins coming at home. Carolina will embark on its first road trip of the year next week, starting with a visit to Penn in Philadelphia Friday at 5 p.m.

The women’s team returned to the field Sunday and asserted control almost immediately against Louisville. Kate Levy, daughter of head coach Jenny Levy, scored less than a minute into the game and Osburn followed that up with another goal 11 seconds later. The rout was on.

UNC led 5-0 before five minutes had been played, then pushed that lead to 12-1 by the end of the first quarter. Carolina eventually let its foot off the gas, but not before putting 24 shots into the Cardinal net in a 24-3 win. Humphrey again registered a hat trick with six goals and three assists, while six other Tar Heels found the back of the net multiple times. Carolina outshot Louisville 43-10.

Carolina is now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels have won 26 consecutive games overall. UNC will return to action Friday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Florida State at Dorrance Field.
