The UNC men’s and women’s basketball teams each dropped spots in the latest AP Poll Monday after both suffered losses during the week. The men dropped five spots from No. 11 to No. 16, while the women dropped one spot from No. 21 to No. 22.
The men’s team’s previous ranking of No. 11 had been a season high, but the Tar Heels promptly spoiled it with a 75-66 loss at Miami Tuesday night. Carolina never led in the game. But the worse news to emerge from that game was a fractured left hand suffered by freshman star Caleb Wilson, who is now out indefinitely. Without Wilson and without Henri Veesaar, who sat out with both an illness and a lower-body injury, UNC rebounded from the loss to beat Pitt 79-65 at the Smith Center Saturday.
Duke remains the highest-ranked ACC team, rising one spot to No. 3. Elsewhere, Virginia rose one spot to No. 14 and Louisville rose three spots to No. 21. Clemson dropped out of the poll completely, but is still received the most votes of any unranked team. Miami also received votes. For a full look at the men’s poll, click here.
UNC is 20-5 overall and 8-4 in ACC play and will be back in action when it visits NC State Tuesday at 7 p.m.
On the women’s side, the Tar Heels won their midweek game against SMU but then saw their eight-game winning streak snapped at Duke Sunday. Louisville is the highest-ranked ACC team in this week’s poll at No. 8, while the Blue Devils sit at No. 9. UNC is the only other ranked league member, although Syracuse did receive a vote.
Carolina is 21-6 overall and 10-4 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will return to action when they visit Virginia Tech Thursday at 6 p.m.
