UNC used a 16-0 run in the first quarter to take control at Wake Forest Sunday afternoon and rolled from there to an 84-56 win against the Demon Deacons. It’s Carolina’s seventh win in a row and its 20th on the season.
UNC’s run came after the Tar Heels had fallen behind early and were stuck on six points through five minutes played. That changed in a hurry as the Tar Heels proceeded to make six of their next nine shots to end the first quarter, including a pair of three-pointers from Lanie Grant and another from Nyla Brooks. Carolina led 22-11 after 10 minutes.
Wake Forest trimmed the deficit to 10 points at halftime, but the Tar Heels reasserted their will in the third quarter. Nyla Harris scored seven points by herself in the first three minutes of the period, helping UNC shoot 10-18 (55.6 percent) as a team and outscore the Demon Deacons 26-13. The Tar Heels led 65-42 entering the final 10 minutes.
Harris ended her night with 19 points on 7-9 shooting, but she was outdone by the freshman Brooks, who scored a career-high 21 points and made five of Carolina’s 11 threes. Elsewhere, Indya Nivar flirted with her second triple-double of the season with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
As a team, UNC outrebounded Wake Forest 41-24 and turned that into a 21-1 advantage in second-chance points. Carolina also outscored the Demon Deacons 21-8 on the fast break.
The Tar Heels are now 20-5 overall and 9-3 in ACC play, marking the fifth consecutive season UNC has won at least 20 games under head coach Courtney Banghart. Up next, Carolina will return home to Carmichael Arena to host SMU Thursday night at 6 p.m.
