After scoring 20 points in back-to-back wins against East Tennessee State and Ohio State, UNC forward Caleb Wilson was named the ACC’s Freshman of the Week Monday afternoon.
Wilson’s also averaged 11.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game across the two Tar Heel victories. His scoring came with efficiency: the freshman from Atlanta shot 15-22 (68.2 percent) from the floor in the two games.
He played hero for Carolina in the 71-70 win against the Buckeyes, scoring 16 of his 20 points in the second half and blocking a potential game-winning putback as time expired. Wilson also grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds that game.
This is the second time Wilson has been named the ACC’s Freshman of the Week. He was also named ACC Player of the Week on Nov. 10 following Carolina’s wins against Central Arkansas and Kansas. This season, Wilson leads UNC in scoring (19.5 points per game) and rebounding (10.8 rebounds per game) and ranks third in assists. His field goal percentage of 54.8 ranks second on the team among players with at least 20 attempts.
Wilson and the Tar Heels will be back in action Monday night when they host East Carolina at the Smith Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
