A Durham man has been arrested and is facing multiple felony charges for crimes in Chatham County, the county sheriff’s office said Wednesday afternoon.
Police say 26-year-old Dekenneth Mileek Covington first came to their attention after a vehicle break-in was reported at a commercial area in the Governors Village neighborhood of Chapel Hill. The victim reported losing multiple personal items, including financial cards, from the vehicle.
The sheriff’s office says the stolen cards were then used at the Walmart at 12500 U.S. Highway 15-501 in northern Chatham County. Surveillance footage from the store helped investigators identify Covington, who reportedly had been involved in additional vehicle break-ins in other jurisdictions.
Police say efforts to apprehend Covington led to “multiple dangerous encounters,” including one in which Covington rammed patrol vehicles from the Garner Police Department during a pursuit. On June 22, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop against Covington, during which he fled. Police say during the chase, Covington climbed through the sunroof of his vehicle with the aid of a passenger and fired a weapon at the pursuing troopers. He was ultimately apprehended “without further incident” and taken into custody at the Lee County Detention Center.
Covington is charged in Chatham County with multiple felonies, including three counts of financial card theft and breaking and entering a motor vehicle with theft. The secured bond for his Chatham County charges is $50,000, while the total bond for all charges in all jurisdictions is $1,415,000. He is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on July 7.
