The Town of Carrboro has begun installing a series of new parking wayfinding signs to denote public parking lots in the downtown area.

The process to approve the designs, which feature natural elements such as pine cones and bees, first began in 2018. The project was spearheaded by the Carrboro Tourism Development Authority, but was put on hold as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The development authority is also the group responsible for funding the project, with assistance from Orange County.

Now, the town contractor and the Carrboro Public Works staff are collaborating on the installation process. The goal is for the new designs to stand out to visitors and residents looking for free parking in the downtown area. In a statement, the town also said that it would consider adding more signage for new parking lots or landmarks as the need arises.

There are currently 11 free parking lots in downtown Carrboro. This includes the Drakeford Parking Deck, part of the town’s recently completed Drakeford Library Complex that held its ribbon-cutting ceremony in March.
