Carolina earned a spot in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2021 on Sunday night. The Tar Heels are a No. 8 seed and will face Yale in the opening round on the campus of Penn State on Friday at 5 p.m.

In its second season under head coach Mike Schall, Carolina posted a 22-7 regular-season record and a 14-6 record in ACC matches. The Tar Heels finished 13-2 in home matches, 7-5 on the road and 2-0 at neutral sites. UNC finished fifth in the ACC standings, its highest finish since 2016.

Also representing the ACC in the NCAA Tournament field are No. 1 seed Pittsburgh, No. 1 Louisville, No. 2 SMU, No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 Florida State, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Miami and unseeded NC State. Carolina went 2-6 against those eight teams.

The winner of Friday’s match between UNC and Yale will face the winner of No. 1 seed Penn State and unseeded Delaware State on Saturday, December 7 at 6:30 p.m. Schall has connections to Penn State, having served as an assistant coach with the Nittany Lions for 12 seasons and winning a national championship in 1999.
