Twelve different UNC athletic programs achieved a perfect Academic Progress Rate of 1,000 during the 2022-23 school year and 20 exceeded the national average of their respective sports in their four-year rates, according to a release from the athletic department.

A highlight of the latest report is the football program, which achieved a record four-year rate for the second consecutive time. Its score of 996 is 14 points higher than its four-year rate measured last year, is the highest of any team in the ACC and tied for the third-best among schools in the Power 5 conferences.

“Really proud of the guys,” head coach Mack Brown said on Twitter. “This is a great accomplishment and we couldn’t be happier with how they’re approaching their academics.”

Six programs scored a perfect four-year rate of 1,000: men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, women’s swimming and diving and women’s tennis. Along with football, those seven programs rank among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports.

Twelve programs posted perfect single-year scores for 2022-23: men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s cross country, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis.

Women’s fencing has achieved a perfect score in every season since the NCAA began tracking APR in 2003-04, while women’s tennis has done it for 14 straight years and men’s golf for eight. Women’s basketball’s perfect score was its second consecutive and third in four years; its four-year score of 995 is also its best ever. Men’s track and field also set a new four-year best (990) while baseball tied its four-year best (989).
