The UNC women’s tennis team capped off a dominant ACC Tournament run with a 4-1 win against Virginia in the championship on Sunday, clinching Carolina’s first tournament title since 2021.

The Tar Heels were the No. 1 seed in the tournament and swept Duke in the quarterfinals and NC State in the semifinals to reach Sunday’s final. The Wolfpack had been the only ACC team to beat Carolina this season.

In the final, UNC dominated in doubles play, winning all three matches to clinch the crucial opening point. The team of Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran won the clinching match.

Elizabeth Scotty won the first singles match for the Tar Heels, coming back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to win the next two, 6-1, 6-2. Tran won her singles match on Court No. 4 in straight sets to put UNC on the precipice of a title. Virginia’s Natasha Subhash beat Carolina’s Carson Tanguilig on Court No. 3 to get the Cavaliers on the board – the only point any opponent would take off the Tar Heels all weekend – but Tatum Evans came back from a first set loss to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the championship.

With the win, Carolina will have the ACC’s automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA Tournament, where the Tar Heels will enter as the defending national champions. UNC is 21-3 overall and has won eight straight matches. The full tournament bracket will be announced on Monday, April 29.
