The UNC men’s basketball program has revealed the jersey numbers the team will wear during the 2023-24 season. The numbers are the first of a new era: the NCAA now allows players to wear jerseys featuring Nos. 6-9.
Rising sophomore Seth Trimble is taking advantage of this rule, changing his jersey from No. 0 last season to No. 7 this season. According to UNC records, the last Tar Heel to wear No. 7 in men’s basketball was Simon Terrell, who played from 1948-50. Trimble is not the only returner to change jerseys for next season; walk-on Rob Landry will change his jersey from No. 15 to No. 22 to honor his father Pearce, who played at Carolina in the 1990s. The No. 22 jersey was most recently worn by Justin McKoy. Creighton Lebo is also changing his jersey from No. 25 to No. 14. Lebo’s father and current UNC assistant coach Jeff Lebo wore No. 14 when he played for the Tar Heels, and the number was most recently worn by Puff Johnson.
Returners R.J. Davis (No. 4), Armando Bacot (No. 5), Jalen Washington (No. 13) and Duwe Farris (No. 34) will all wear their same jerseys from last season.
Incoming freshmen Zayden High and Elliot Cadeau will take Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. High’s No. 1 jersey was worn by Leaky Black for the last five seasons, and Cadeau’s No. 2 was made famous by recent stars Caleb Love, Cole Anthony and Coby White during that same time span.
Incoming transfer Paxson Wojcik from Brown will wear No. 8, which hasn’t been worn since Richard Patterson donned the jersey in the 1950s. Notre Dame transfer Cormac Ryan will take No. 3, most recently worn by Dontrez Styles. Jae’Lyn Withers will take No. 24, last worn by Tyler Nickel. Stanford’s Harrison Ingram will don No. 55, which hasn’t been seen since Christian Keeling wore it during the 2019-20 season. Finally, West Virginia transfer James Okonkwo will wear No. 32, which was most recently worn by Pete Nance last season.
