The UNC women’s basketball team will take on the sport’s marquee program next season. The Tar Heels will travel up north to face 11-time national champions UConn in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville, CT on December 10. The game is part of a tripleheader involving Florida State, UCLA, South Carolina and Utah. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in September.
“Scheduling competitive opportunities against the best programs in the country remains the priority for us every season,” said UNC head coach Courtney Banghart. “This coming season, we are excited to play UConn at the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase. This event will bring together many of the great traditions in women’s basketball, shining a spotlight on the greatness of our game. We already look forward to December.”
The Tar Heels were a game away from facing the Huskies in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, but ultimately fell to No. 3 seed Ohio State in the second round. The Buckeyes would go on to defeat the Huskies in the Sweet 16.
December’s game will be Carolina’s first meeting with UConn since Banghart took over as head coach in 2019. The teams played often in the 1990s and 2000s but haven’t met since January of 2012, when the Huskies throttled Carolina by 49 points. UNC’s last win in the series came during the 2006-07 season, an 82-76 win in Chapel Hill. UConn leads the overall series 7-5 and has won five straight.
“We look forward to welcoming these teams and their fans at one of the most exciting tournaments of the year,” said John L. Doleva, president of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The game means both the men’s and women’s teams will take on their Husky counterparts next season. The men’s team is reportedly scheduled to play defending national champion UConn as part of the Jimmy V Classic in New York’s Madison Square Garden.
