After just one year on the job, UNC men’s basketball head coach Hubert Davis is getting an extension and a raise. Davis and the program agreed to a new, six-year contract through the summer of 2028 worth about $16.7 million and signed it in late August.
Davis originally signed a five-year contract with the school upon his hiring in the spring of 2021. That deal was worth around $10 million when accounting for base salary, supplemental pay, apparel agreements and an expense allowance. Davis made $1.8 million in the 2021-22 season, then added another $575,000 in bonuses onto that by virtue of his team’s run to the Final Four.
Davis’ base salary in this new deal will be $400,000 annually, with a supplemental compensation which increases each year of the contract. For the 2022-23 season, that compensation will total $1.1 million. Davis will also receive $50,000 for his expense allowance, “to be used for entertainment and other appropriate purposes to advance the program,” according to the contract.
Davis also has plenty of opportunities to earn bonuses: ACC regular season and tournament titles will pay $50,000, appearing in the NCAA Tournament pays $100,000, and a national championship pays a whopping $250,000. Bonuses are also in place for winning ACC Coach of the Year, National Coach of the Year or posting an Academic Progress Rate greater than or equal to 975.
Davis, UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations Nathan Knuffman and Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz each signed the contract on August 22. The UNC Board of Trustees approved it two days later.
