The most successful program in the history of women’s college basketball reportedly wants the Tar Heels. According to UNC head coach Courtney Banghart, Carolina and the Connecticut Huskies are in the process of scheduling a two-game series starting next season. Banghart made the announcement on The Tar Heel Show, hosted by “British Tar Heel” George Harmer.

“They called us to play them and said, ‘We’d love to do a neutral-site game,” Banghart said. “And I said, ‘We’ll sign it today.'”

According to Banghart, UConn’s original proposal was for a single neutral-site game at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The arena is part of the Mohegan Sun Casino complex in Uncasville, CT, just 28 miles from UConn’s campus.

“I said, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa!'” Banghart said. “That is a home-and-home. We’re happy to play it, but then we’ll do a neutral-site game.”

Indeed, Banghart said she hopes the second leg of the two-game series will take place at the Greensboro Coliseum.

“They’ll be coming somewhere,” Banghart said of the Huskies’ visit to North Carolina. “We’re gonna promote Greensboro as our neutral-site game.”

The first game in Connecticut is tentatively scheduled for the 2023-24 season, which will be the senior campaigns of stars Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Williams and others. It will also be the senior season for Connecticut superstar Paige Bueckers, who will miss this season with an ACL injury.

UConn holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series against the Tar Heels, though the two sides haven’t met since 2012. Carolina hasn’t earned a win in the series since 2007, when it defeated the Huskies 82-76.

UConn has won 11 national championships and appeared in 22 Final Fours. The Huskies have reached the Final Four in each of the last 14 NCAA Tournaments, including reaching the title game last season before falling to South Carolina.

“Wherever your program is, is how you schedule,” Banghart said. “We think we’re a Top 10 team, so we have to schedule like that.”
