Larry Miller, who starred with the UNC men’s basketball team from 1965 through 1968, will become the 13th Tar Heel to be inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. The National Association of Basketball Coaches announced the Hall’s most recent class Wednesday, with Miller among such names as Richard “Rip” Hamilton of UConn and former coaches Lon Kruger and John Beilein.
Miller is still the only player in the history of the UNC program to win ACC Player of the Year twice, which he did in 1967 and 1968. He also won ACC Tournament MVP in each of those seasons. Miller was a second team All-American in 1967 before becoming a consensus first team All-American the next season.
Miller proved to be one of the most important players in the career of head coach Dean Smith. Miller helped the Tar Heels win Smith’s first ACC Tournament and reach Smith’s first Final Four in 1967. The team went back to the Final Four in 1968 before losing to UCLA in the national championship game. Carolina reached a third straight Final Four the season after Miller graduated, a three-year run which likely saved Smith’s job.
For his career at UNC, Miller averaged 21.9 points per game over the course of three seasons. His 278 made shots during the 1966-67 season rank eighth all-time at Carolina, and his 717 points in 1967-68 also rank eighth.
Miller played seven years in the American Basketball Association, being named to the ABA All-Rookie first team in 1969 with the Los Angeles Stars.
Former UNC head coach Roy Williams, already a member of the Hall of Fame, will be recognized at the induction ceremony as well.
