As the newest rankings of universities across the United States continue to be released, UNC continues to place highly among other public universities.
The Wall Street Journal/Times shared its Higher Education 2022 College Rankings List on Tuesday, which saw UNC place third among public colleges in the country. Across all public and private schools, the newspaper listed the Chapel Hill university as 33rd, which it maintained from the 2021 rankings shared in March.
According to the Wall Street Journal/Times, their rankings are based on more than a dozen factors across four main categories: resources, engagement, outcomes and environment. The newspaper also said it saw “schools with the resources to deal with the fallout from COVID-19” place highest in its list this year.
The rankings listed Carolina’s strongest scores in the outcomes category, according to UNC. That category factors in the latest graduation rates, graduate salaries, debt after graduation and reputation.
The top spot in the Wall Street Journal/Times ratings went to Harvard University, which retained its first place finish in last year’s list. Stanford University came in second, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University and Duke University rounded out the top five.
Last week, the U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of “America’s Best Colleges” listed UNC as its fifth-best public school and tied for 28th out of all universities. Previously, the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy listed UNC as its seventh-best public school and 29th in the world.
UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz released a statement about the Wall Street Journal/Times rankings on Tuesday.
“These rankings demonstrate Carolina’s commitment to our mission of life-changing research and world-class scholarship,” he said. “In recording our highest score for outcome, these rankings recognize our commitment to impact on the people of the state and beyond. I am grateful to our community for its hard work to maintain our excellence, particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
