USA Field Hockey revealed the roster for the 2021-22 national team on Tuesday, with six current or former Tar Heels among the 36-player list.
Former Tar Heel standouts Ashley Hoffman and Lauren Moyer join current stars Erin Matson, Cassie Sumfest, Madison Orobono and Paityn Wirth on the roster.
Hoffman and Matson each won the Honda Sport Award as the nation’s top player while at UNC and will join Moyer as returning veterans of the national team.
Sumfest, Orobono and Wirth are making their first appearances for the squad, bringing the total number of Tar Heels to ever represent the United States in international play up to 37 all-time.
Each of the four current UNC players have helped lead the Tar Heels to three consecutive NCAA titles and a combined 65-1 record over that span.
Head coach Anthony Farry selected the U.S. roster following the Young Women’s National Championship event this past weekend in Virginia Beach.
The pool of players considered for national team selection includes the top collegiate and post-collegiate players, members of the 2019-20 U.S. Rise and U-21 Women’s National Teams, the U.S. National Development Team as well as current national team members.
Training for the team is scheduled to resume at the beginning of August, as it prepares for the 2022 Pan American Cup. The Pan Am Cup will run from Jan. 20-30, 2022 in Santiago, Chile. It is a qualifying event for the FIH Hockey World Cup.
The U.S. National Team will also compete in the FIH Hockey Pro League, with the first game scheduled for Feb. 16, 2022.
