Orange County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies arrested a Durham man who fled an Orange County traffic stop on Wednesday.
A release from the office said Kahlil Christopher, 24, fled from a vehicle after a trooper from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol pulled the vehicle over on Groucho Road near Highway 70. The trooper made the stop for an expired tag and a seat belt violation committed by the front seat passenger, who was Christopher.
Officers with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Safe Streets Task Force spent several hours searching for Christopher before a receiving a tip from a resident who spotted Christopher in their yard. Shortly after, officers arrested Christopher in the wood line off Interstate 85 near the Durham county line. According to the release, officers found a handgun located nearby Christopher following his arrest.
Authorities later found Christopher had multiple outstanding warrants in Durham County for him. The sheriff office’s release said in addition to the seat belt violation and a resist charge related to the traffic stop, the magistrate processed Christopher for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, communicating threats, discharging a firearm into occupied property and a violation of a local ordinance charge related to the firearm charge. Those charges stemmed from a domestic violence incident earlier in February, according to the release, which led to Christopher being placed into the detention center under no bond.
Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said this incident is the perfect example of the need for the Safe Streets Task Force, which is made up of members from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
“That collaboration serves as an efficiency accelerator in situations like the one the trooper had yesterday,” Blackwood said in a statement. “The officers on the task force already know how to work with each other, and they can immediately function at a level of peak performance because they know each other’s strengths. Additionally, they already have a command structure in place to guide them as they work.”
According to the release, authorities transported Christopher to the Durham County Detention Center Thursday morning to await his first court appearance.
