Senior forward Catherine Hayden scored three times in the first half on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill, as she spearheaded what turned into an 8-0 blowout victory for the top-ranked UNC field hockey team over the William & Mary Tribe.
It was Megan DuVernois that actually opened the scoring for the Tar Heels (5-0) just over two minutes into the action, but Hayden got on the board just two minutes later as UNC wasted little time asserting its dominance.
Hayden added two more goals before the halftime break, while four different Tar Heels–Marissa Creatore, Riley Fulmer, Eva Smolenaars and Erin Matson–each chipped in one goal apiece in the second half.
“We wanted to have a quick start today,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said. “We were really putting an emphasis on starting quickly and getting a result.”
For the game, the Tar Heels tallied 18 shots on goal compared to just four for William & Mary (1-4).
UNC’s winning streak dating back to 2017 now sits at 28 consecutive games.
