Matt Hughes has announced his intention to seek the seat on the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners that will be vacated by Brian Lowen this spring.

Lowen announced his intentions earlier this month to resign in March. His seat is not up for election until the fall of 2019.

Hughes is currently the second vice chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Orange County Board of Commissioners in 2015.

“Hillsborough has been my home for most of my life and the place that I am proud to call my home,” Hughes said in a release announcing his intention to seek the vacancy. “Two years ago, I ran for County Commissioner because I was deeply concerned about economic development, sustainability, and affordability while remaining true to our community’s culture and character. These issues continue to be at the forefront and deeply interconnected. They are why I’m interested in serving on the Town Board and continuing to serve Hillsborough in a new and exciting way.”

Hughes has served on several appointed boards and commissions in Orange County and was previously the chair of the county Democratic Party. Hughes was also recently appointed to the North Carolina Human Relations Commission.

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners met Monday to discuss the process of filling Lowen’s seat.
