CHAPEL HILL – Durham Police said Wednesday that they don’t expect additional charges to be filed against UNC basketball player P.J. Hairston following his June arrest, according to a report by WRAL.
At a Durham traffic stop on June 5, Hairston was found driving without a license, and also charged with possession of marijuana, along with the two passengers in the car. The arrest report also listed a 9mm gun, though reports indicate it was found on the ground near the car. No one has claimed ownership of the gun.
Durham police said Wednesday they do not expect to file any charges related to the firearm and will not release additional information.
Rental records show the car Hairston was driving during June incident, according to USA Today, was under the name Haydn “Fats” Thomas , a convicted felon facing a pending drug case. That same vehicle was also rented under Thomas’ name from March 25 to April 15 and was ticketed twice for parking without a valid permit on UNC’s campus, ESPN reports. Hairston was also cited for speeding in Durham on May 13 in a vehicle rented under the name Catinia Farrington with the same home address as Thomas in Durham.
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement Wednesday that the university is “still gathering information” and wouldn’t comment further until it had “sufficient understanding of the facts involved.”
