Democrat Beth Wood has been reelected North Carolina state auditor and outgoing Republican state Rep. Josh Dobson will be the next labor commissioner after they both won close races.

Wood earned a fourth four-year term by defeating Republican challenger Tony Street. Dobson, from McDowell County, will succeed retiring Commissioner Cherie Berry after beating Democratic nominee Jessica Holmes, a Wake County commissioner.

As of Wednesday, Wood led Street by 93,450 votes, while Dobson had a margin of nearly 89,000 votes over Holmes. The Associated Press called both races after determining there weren’t enough outstanding votes for the trailing candidates to catch up.

Wood is a Craven County native and certified public accountant who was first elected to the auditor’s post in 2008. Dobson joined the state House in 2013 and became a top budget-writer in the chamber.

Several North Carolina races remained too early to call as county election boards receive mail-in ballots and review provisional ballots. County boards will finalize their tallies on Friday. The races yet to be called include those for president, state attorney general and two seats on the state Supreme Court. Four legislative races also haven’t been called yet.
