Mark Dorosin held onto his single-digit lead over Penny Rich after a recount on Thursday of the tight race in District 1 for a seat on the Orange County Board of Commissioners.

The recount of ballots at the county’s Board of Elections meeting caused Dorosin’s nine-vote lead gained from the count of absentee and provisional ballots one week earlier to change to seven. Rich had initially held a nine-vote lead herself following Election Night. The final vote tally stood 12,503 for Dorosin and 12, 496 for Rich.

Dorosin took to the Facebook on Thursday to post about his re-election. He also expressed his respect for Rich, who is currently serving as the chair of the board.

“Nothing but love for my comrade and board chair Penny Rich,” Dorosin wrote, “who ran a great campaign and whose absence from the board will be a real loss for the community, and for everyone who supported this tumultuous effort!”

Dorosin and Rich were both beaten by challenger candidate Jean Hamilton on Election Night for the other available District 1 seat, winning 37 percent of the votes compared to the incumbents’ 31 percent.

Rich will finish her current term on the Board of Orange County Commissioners in November.
