Have you ever seen a “leaning jowler?” What about a “double razorback?” For those familiar with the game “Pass the Pigs,” those lucky positions represent 15 and 20 points, respectively.

“Pass the Pigs” is a whimsical take on the classic dice game “Pig” that features asymmetrical dice in the form of model pigs. On Sunday, January 29, City Barbeque in Durham will be hosting a “Pass the Pigs” competition to benefit local food banks with the help of Food Rescue, an organization that helps to connect food banks and those who wish to support them.

“Our work at Food Rescue is aimed at fighting the tragic statistic that 1 in 6 Americans are food insecure, while we waste 40% of our food,” said Food Rescue President and Executive Director John Williamson. “City Barbeque’s influence reaches far beyond each restaurant in the communities they serve and we are thrilled to partner with them.”

City Barbeque has a history of supporting food banks in the surrounding area of its restaurants, and three separate locations in the Raleigh/Durham area making weekly donations to Dorcas Ministries, Garner Area Ministries and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.

“We don’t want to see perfectly great food go to waste. Through Food Rescue, we have been able to feed thousands of people who need help each year,” said Rick Malir, founder of City Barbeque. “I would like to challenge every food provider to see what they can do to save their perfectly good food.”

According to its website, City Barbeque gives ten percent of pre-tax profits to local non-profits and charities. Additionally, City Barbeque as a whole provided more than 30,000 meals through relationships with Food Rescue and local food banks in 2016 alone.

During the “Pass the Pigs” competition, guests who donate $5 or more to support partnered food banks will be given their very own “Pass the Pigs” game set to take home. A donation isn’t required to play the game, however. Patrons can grab a sign-up sheet, and once they have finished their meal, bring the completed sheet up to a special “rolling station” and toss the pigs five times. Scores will be recorded and posted on a scoring wall, and the highest scorer in each restaurant will win a $50 gift card. The highest scorer across all City Barbeque establishments will receive a $250 gift card!

The Pass the Pigs competition will be held between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, but January 29 is also “Family Time” at City Barbeque. Special offers will be available throughout the day, including a free kid’s plate with any adult meal purchase. Guests need only mention “Family Time” when ordering.

May the pigs be ever in your favor.
