****UPDATE: The all clear was given in Carrboro shortly before eight o’clock Thursday night. The vehicle in question was registered to the suspect in the incident on the UNC campus earlier in the day, police said, but there were no dangerous materials found in vehicle after breach from bomb squad.****
Carrboro Police are investigating a “suspicious vehicle incident” in the area of West Weaver Street and Lindsay Street Thursday afternoon. Police said that local businesses are being evacuated as a precaution.
Carrboro authorities are asking residents to avoid the area, including side streets. Most of downtown Carrboro has been evacuated and many roadways are closed – including the intersection of West Main and West Weaver streets.
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called to the scene to assist Carrboro Police in the investigation.
The Carrboro investigation comes after Chapel Hill Police confirmed that a fire at the Davie Poplar on the UNC campus had been extinguished. UNC officials said in a message to the campus community that there was a “detonation of a small device” at the iconic tree on the Chapel Hill campus.
UNC officials also say a suspect is in custody.
Cameron Avenue is currently closed between South Columbia Street and Raleigh Street.
A video being shared on social media shows an individual attempting to stamp out the fire leading to a small burst of flames. There is no word on any injuries at this time.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more information.
