Time is standing still in Hillsborough, at least according to the town clock above the Historic Orange County Courthouse.

A release says the clock is malfunctioning due to a gear issue and a technician is expected to begin repairs Friday.

The clock – which was made in Birmingham, England – is believed have been a royal gift to Hillsborough around 1769, according to the town, and initially stopped working in 2001.

The clock has been above the courthouse since late 1846, according to a release. The clock tower was reconstructed during the early 2000s when the clock was being restored.
