****UPDATE: Chapel Hill Fire officials say the fire has been contained. Homestead Road has been opened. Smoke will likely be seen throughout the afternoon.****

Chapel Hill Fire crews are battling a “large outside fire” on Thursday afternoon.

Officials say the fire is burning near the intersection of Weaver Dairy Road Extension and Homestead Road.

The fire is putting off a lot of smoke, according to the fire department.

Officials say roads are being closed in the vicinity of the fire and are asking motorists to avoid the area if possible. Chapel Hill Police officials said Homestead Road was closed between Seawell School Road and Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard.

There is no word at this time what started the fire or how long crews are expecting it to take to extinguish the fire.
