Today is Tuesday, October 20, 2015. The highly anticipated trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released to the world on Monday night. The world is buzzing.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
In 2012, Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion. Star Wars was at the center of that purchase. Disney wanted to make more movies in the Star Wars universe. At the time, Star Wars creator George Lucas explained, “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”
The first “Disney Star Wars” movie will release on December 18, 2015. The trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released to the world via another Disney property, ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Football fans were treated to the highly anticipated trailer at halftime of Monday’s game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.
Immediately after the trailer aired, tickets for the December 18th release went on sale. The influx of ticket sales temporarily crushed movie ticket buying websites Fandango and MovieTickets. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is expected to bring in $650 million in the United States and over $2 billion worldwide.
The trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens does feature a few old favorites. Chewbacca and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo make appearances. Those two popular characters were featured in a previous teaser trailer. This clip features Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. This is our first glimpse of Leia in the film.
We do not see Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. Hamill is also featured on the recently released poster. He is, however, in the actual movie.
J.J. Abrams is the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Abrams previously worked on recently Star Trek feature films.
