A 10-year-old Hacked Instagram

A 10-year-old Finnish boy found a major flaw in Instagram.  He figured out a a way to access Instagram’s servers and delete text that is posted by users.  He emailed Instagram to alert the company.  Facebook, which owns Instagram, quickly fixed the bug.

He was paid $10,000 for the fix.  Facebook has a bug bounty program.  That program has received over 2,400 valid submission and awarded more than $4.3 million in payouts since 2011.

A Walmart employee named Shane became an internet hero.  Notes from management written on a staffroom board had some special instructions for their mischievous employee.

One example reads, “Shane, stop putting out samples labeled as ‘mystery meats.'”
