It’s a perfect time for athletes and celebrities to get involved.

If you’ve noticed, there is a national emergency that the famous can help quell, if not cure — and the current pandemic can play a role.

Look, the NBA and NHL are having a hard time trying to figure out how to finish their virus-interrupted seasons. Baseball is not even close to deciding how to start playing games. Star performers are all idle.

Athletes, present and past, have been speaking out after the senseless death of George Floyd in Minnesota. What if dozens of the biggest influencers in the world, fill up their empty schedules and join together to support a carefully crafted platform?

Sure, the NFL is determined to play. If so, those guys have at least one day off a week to join organized events or tape radio and TV public service spots to help calm America down and instill confidence in the nation that much-needed changes will be made.

People listen to celebrities and support their causes. From Farm Aid through every organized event since, the voices of those we idolize can make a difference in how laws are written and behavior modified.

Why not take whatever time was left in their halted careers and create the loudest voice in this country to bring about changes that are desperately needed. This is more than donating money, it’s about using their time and the circumstances they find themselves in.

Putting the greatest names and faces – from LeBron James to Mike Trout to Beyoncé to Springsteen – to lead such a coalition can give the nation a voice and soul that are getting lost in hollow rhetoric. And certainly well-known coaches from all sports can add their impact.

Even Michael Jordan, quiet throughout his playing career, is now speaking out. Black and white athletes and performers could host rallies in person or communicate through technology to get the messages out to politicians, public servants and the people.

What is going on today runs from truly dangerous to counter-productive. We need to turn the partisanship that is ripping America apart into one united message that brings action. And what better time?
