It’s Duke-Carolina week, so let’s start with common opponents.
We’ll be hearing lots of statistics and metrics this week as the Tar Heels and Blue Devils tangle in the first of two contests this Wednesday night in Durham. Nine common opponents to date is one of them, and the results are fairly surprising.
Duke has the edge against the nine common foes, but not by much. In non-conference opponents, the Blue Devils blew out Kentucky by 34 on a neutral court in the season opener for both teams. Five weeks later, the improving Wildcats handled UNC by eight — also on a neutral floor. So that’s plus 42 for Duke.
The other non-ACC team both Blue Bloods played is Gonzaga. Duke lost by 2 to the Zags in Maui after its rally from a double-digit deficit fell just short. Carolina had one of its best nights against Gonzaga, winning by 13 in the Smith Center against the Bulldogs playing without two key starters. Now Duke’s plus points are down to 31.
The ACC schedule has tilted the plus-minus back toward the Tar Heels. Duke won at Wake Forest by 22 after a close first half. We all know what happened in Winston-Salem Saturday; game over by 38 after Carolina scored the first 18 points of the contest. Duke’s plus margin drops to 15.
It goes back to plus 25 when comparing Duke’s home win over Virginia by two points to the Heels’ home loss to the Wahoos by eight points. Carolina won at Pitt by 25 points, Duke by 15 points. Duke won at Georgia Tech by 13, Carolina by 23. The Blue Devils’ plus points are now only five.
The metric goes back to 10 after comparing Duke’s 21-point over Notre Dame to Carolina beating the Irish but 16. But in the most recent common-opponent games, the plus-minus draws almost dead even. The Tar Heels picked up 8 points by winning at Louisville by 10; The Blue Devils, after trailing there by 23, rallied to win by 2 points, dropping their lead to a plus 2.
And in home dates against N.C. State, Duke won by 16 and Carolina by 17, although the game in Durham was much closer than the blowout in Chapel Hill.
UNC has games left against BC, Florida State, Clemson and Syracuse, while Duke has yet to play Miami and Virginia Tech, which lost a total of three times to the Tar Heels.
So right now, by common opponents, the Blue Devils should be favored by 1 point on their home court Wednesday.

Chansky's Notebook: The 'Cool School'On day one, Mack Brown showed why he is still the perfect fit. At a press conference that was American Idol for some and déjà vu for others, Carolina’s new football coach said in so many words that he is better at 67 than he was at 37 when he took over the Tar Heels for the first […]

Chansky's Notebook: DEE-Fense (Clap, Clap)! It’s the D, not the O, most responsible for Carolina’s fast start. Before the season I asked Lee Pace, who is the best writer of Tar Heel sports around, how he thought Mack Brown’s first team of his second tenure would do. Pace predicted Carolina would be 4-0 going into the Clemson game because a […]

Art’s Angle: Yesterday’s GoneMack is back, but I’m not sure we can say the Tar Heels are — because they may never have been in this position before. A quarterback who was in high school a year ago. Linebackers who had never played linebacker. Others who had never been in a college game. A new coaching staff that […]

Chansky's Notebook: Mack's AttackCan Mack Brown’s offense score enough points to win six games? The Tar Heels’ second-stint head coach says one of the differences between the old Mack and the new Mack is that he is not going to be a CEO anymore. That is how Brown was labeled in the past — hire a great staff, […]

Chansky's Notebook: The New Carolina WayBubba Cunningham has continued redefining the Carolina Way. With his hiring of new women’s basketball coach Courtney Banghart, Cunningham has reaffirmed his commitment to make UNC athletics as good as it can be, regardless of where his administrators and coaches come from. The old “Carolina Way,” which somehow morphed from Dean Smith’s mantra to play hard, play smart and […]

Chansky's Notebook: Something to ShowSaturday is the first big test of the Mack Brown magic. No other coach could have shaken Carolina football out of the apathy that had finally overcome the program in Larry Fedora’s last two losing seasons. The alumni and fan base had moved on from anger to the annual excitement of another basketball season. Kenan had […]

Chansky's Notebook: All Done Already? All the one-and-dones are done before the Final Four. That’s because as they went deeper in the NCAA tournament, the talent almost meets its match against other highly ranked teams that […]

Chansky's Notebook: And Did I Mention…It was almost as if the Tar Heels knew that Duke lost. Those who could follow both the Duke-Virginia Tech and Syracuse-Carolina games saw the Blue Devils’ 77-72 loss to the Hokies end at almost the exact time the Tar Heels were tipping off against the Orange. Of course, it didn’t happen this way, but I could […]

Chansky's Notebook: Tykes And Yikes! The home crowd was ready, even if the Tar Heels weren’t.
