Even old friend Bill Belichick has turned on Donald Trump.

Can you imagine the meetings in the football complex of the New England Patriots when, four days after the MAGA riot at the nation’s capital, Trump announced he would give the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Bill Belichick?

Belichick has total control over the NFL team and has been a long-time friend of the twice-impeached president, dating back to his days as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants when Trump was a wheeler-dealer real estate mogul in Gotham City.

Belichick is already infamous for his relationship with Trump, who read a personal letter from the eight-time Super Bowl champion at one of his last rallies before the 2016 election. The coach heaped praise on the candidate for his great campaign and wished him luck.

Had the January 6 insurgence not happened, no question Belichick would have accepted the medal from his old buddy who had already bestowed the same honor on political supporters Coach Lou Holtz, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh and two beleaguered members of the U.S. House and Senate Devin Nunes and Jim Jordan.

That wouldn’t have bothered Belichick a single bit because, well, he is Bill Belichick. But after the MAGA mob tried to stop the counting of Electoral Votes for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, all that changed.

Massachusetts is a Democratic stronghold that also loves its professional football team. That love affair cooled somewhat after the Patriots lost free agent quarterback Tom Brady last summer and then lost nine games and missed the playoffs this season.

Belichick going to the White House after such a season would have been unpopular for that reason alone, but after what happened at the Capital it became more of a team decision. Even though Patriots owner Robert Kraft is also a Trump supporter, the optics of his coach accepting the medal would have been too much for the entire organization.

After “the tragic events of last week, the decision has been made not to move forward with the award,” Belichick said. In other words, ownership made the coach call an audible on that play.
