On the Porch: Heather St. Clair – Committed to Every Child’s Success

This Week: A Triangle native, Kristine Sloan brings a deep commitment to justice, interdependence, and authenticity into all of her work. She’s an entrepreneur, executive leader, facilitator and strategist. As the Executive Director of Leadership Triangle, Kristine works to connect local leaders to their values, purpose and vision, in service of greater regional collaboration and impact. Prior to Leadership Triangle, Kristine was the CEO of StartingBloc, supporting 3200+ social entrepreneurs and activists as they made significant social change. Earlier in her career, Kristine led a multimillion dollar grant project in Burundi for All Across Africa, designed cross-cultural programming for NC State University, worked on water advocacy rights with indigenous populations in South India and co-founded a social enterprise in West Africa.

This Week: Kindra and Vinny Mammone of CLAWS, Inc. have dedicated their lives to wildlife. With more than 30 years of rehabilitation experience, Kindra has worked with native and exotic species, taught wildlife rehabilitation, contributed to USDA guidance, and is licensed in North Carolina to rehabilitate small mammals, all native birds, and white-tailed deer fawns. Since 1991, Vinny has worked alongside Kindra in wildlife rehabilitation, helping care for countless animals while designing and building the enclosures and habitats that make CLAWS, Inc.'s lifesaving work possible. Together, they are committed to giving wildlife a second chance and inspiring others to care about the natural world.

This Week: Emily Thompson has been a vendor with The Pittsboro Farmers Market since 2021. She has served as the farmer market board president for the last two years and has started a new 2 year term. Emily owns and runs her farm, Heart Song Farm, located between Siler City and Pittsboro. She's known for her large varieties of peppers, flowers, produce, and value added products like seasonings, herbal teas, and tinctures. Emily finds farming an honor to care for her community and family. The goal is to leave the land and people better than you found them.

This Week: Landis Wade is a recovering trial lawyer turned mystery/thriller author who interviewed 500+ authors on his popular Charlotte Readers Podcast. His publications include six works of fiction, eight writing quote books, and numerous short stories. His novels in the Indie Retirement Mystery series won more than ten awards. Kirkus Reviews said, “Mystery fans who love Richard Osman’s cozy Thursday Murder Club books will enjoy the similarly energetic take on mystery-loving retirees.” Before he moved to Durham, the Charlotte Writers Club awarded Landis their Founders Award for service to the club and the literary community.

This Week: Carlos Lima is a native of Caracas, Venezuela. He moved to North Carolina with his family in 2001. Before coming to United Way, Carlos was Director of Operations and Finance at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill for 20 years. Carlos has been the Executive Director of United Way of Chatham County for the past year, and he has learned firsthand the value of service to the community and the benefits of collective impact in addressing the most critical needs of the residents in our county. Carlos and his wife and four grown children have called this area home for over two decades. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, reading, and playing board games. Daisy Butzer is the Impact Manager at United Way of Chatham County, where she leads the Chatham Housing Collective and the Chatham Success Network. Through both collaboratives, Daisy works closely with community partners to coordinate services and use data to better support individuals and families. She draws from her professional experience supporting various public health programs, research studies, and philanthropic initiatives. Originally from Oklahoma, Daisy and her husband moved to North Carolina in 2022 to attend graduate school at UNC. 

This Week: Author Nora Gaskin is a lifelong resident of the Durham-Chapel Hill area. Her latest is novel is "Lammie Loves Cubby". Nora has a bachelor’s degree in English with Honors in Creative Writing from UNC, and a Masters in English from the University of Washington in Seattle. She spent over 24 years as a stockbroker and financial advisor in the Durham office of a major investment firm. She retired in 2005 to focus on writing. She is the publisher at Lystra Books and Literary Services and the author of three novels and one nonfiction book. She lives and writes in Chatham County, inspired by her native landscape, her husband, and dogs. Her favorite word is "gratitude."

This Week: Writer Steven Fenberg discovered Jesse Jones was reputedly the most powerful person in the nation next to President Franklin Roosevelt during the Great Depression and World War II. As chairman of the federal government’s Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC)—the nation’s indispensable infrastructure bank—Jones initiated and managed massive New Deal agencies that saved and expanded the nation’s economy and then shifted the RFC’s priority from domestic economics to global defense to fight and win WWII. Fenberg told this remarkable story as executive producer and co-writer of the Emmy Award winning documentary film “Brother, Can You Spare a Billion?” that was narrated by Walter Cronkite and broadcast nationally on PBS. Fenberg then wrote the biography “Unprecedented Power: Jesse Jones, Capitalism, and the Common Good.”

This Week: Terri Mitchell is the founder of Accelerate Success, a program to help women develop the confidence, skills, and networks needed to thrive in STEM careers. She is a former IBM executive with more than 30 years of experience in the technology industry. Starting as a graduate of Le Moyne College with a degree in Computer Science, she held leadership roles across hardware, software, and systems businesses, culminating in her role as Vice President and IBM Integration Executive. Following her retirement from IBM in 2018, Terri became a founding member of Triangle Women in STEM and began the Accelerate Success program.

This Week: Carl Nordgren is a best-selling novelist, a teacher, and an imaginal cell. After 25 years as an entrepreneur, he taught Creativity at Duke for 14 years. He’s a two-time TEDx speaker and hosts the weekly radio show ‘Exploring your Creative Genius’ on 97.9 The Hill. His calling is to help each of us and all of us grow our creative capacities and develop our entrepreneurial instincts and behaviors, a calling that informed his book "Becoming a Creative Genius (again)". His new book, "Common Ground for US" continues that work and offers new perspectives on governance and policy making for political and community leaders. This Week: Tiffany Muller is the President of End Citizens United. She has helped grow the group into a nationwide organization with more than 4 million members and 1 million grassroots donors. Before leading End Citizens United, Tiffany was Deputy Political Director at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, where she worked with top Senate races. She also served as chief of staff to two members of Congress, ran a political research firm, and was Vice President of Political Operations at the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund. As a member of the Topeka City Council, she led successful efforts to expand anti-discrimination protections.
