SOOCNC August Insights

A perspective from Greg Butler

I believe that it’s great that people with intellectual, developmental, and other conditions can build their fitness in ways that are more engaging than jogging on a treadmill! Training with Special Olympics Orange County, North Carolina has helped me be more consistent, intense and focused with nutrition and physical fitness.

For example, when I was in track/athletics in 2024, I went from being overweight to losing 20 to 30 pounds and being within BMI recommendations for a while. I hope to limit my chances of developing heart disease and many other undesirable conditions, and certain nutrition and physical activity have been said to have influence.

I’ve registered for UNC Unified flag football and Special Olympics Orange County North Carolina soccer!  During practices and other events, it has been great to be part of challenging stigmas and inspiring, educating, entertaining, reinforcing and etc! l hope to continue!
