Respect the Voices of the People

A perspective from Lynn McGee

I am speaking today not only as the Chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, but as an American deeply concerned about what is unfolding in California.

Sending in the National Guard and US Marines to confront peaceful protesters over the objections of California’s Governor Newsom is an outrageous abuse of power. It is an assault on state sovereignty, on local leadership, and most of all, on the basic rights of the people.

Let’s be clear: these protesters are standing up for justice. They are speaking out against deportations without due process. They are exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly. They are not criminals. They are not a threat to national security. They are citizens demanding to be heard.  ICE is breaking foundational constitutional protections, federal due process statutes and international treaties prohibiting torture and indefinite detention.  These are serious legal violations that should not be tolerated by any American, regardless of anyone’s political affiliation.

To meet them with military force is not only morally wrong, but also dangerous. It sends a chilling message to all Americans: that dissent will be met with boots, rifles, and fear.  We stand in solidarity with Governor Newsom and with the people of California. We stand with every community that believes in democracy, in the rule of law, and in the right to protest.

Additionally, we say this today to all those empowered as elected officials including municipalities, counties, states and federal offices:

Reaffirm your oath to support, uphold and respect our Constitution.  Respect the voices of the people. Do not be silent.  Do not back down.  Stand up for our rights.

Thank you.

Lynn McGee

Chair, Orange County Democratic Party
