Insurance of the Carolinas has partnered with 97.9 The Hill/Chapelboro.com to bring you safety tips for this winter season. Here’s today’s safety tip:

Although some of us opt for an artificial tree for the holidays, there’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh pine throughout your home. Taking down the Christmas tree isn’t nearly as much fun as putting it up, but the longer a tree stays up, the greater a fire hazard it becomes. It’s best to discard trees within one month after purchase.

While it may be tempting to vacuum the fallen needles after you carry the tree outside, sweeping them up is the safest option. This is the only way to avoid potential sparks from heat and possible damage to your vacuum cleaner!

Most importantly, never burn Christmas tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood stove. Firs and pines contain a lot of sap, and the needles burn very quickly. Flames can flare up out of control and send sparks flying across a room in a matter of seconds.

Insurance of The Carolinas wants to keep you and your family safe throughout the year, and they’re always there to help if something does go wrong. For more safety information, visit them at their convenient Chapel Hill North location, or online at https://insofthecarolinas.com/
