Following a triumphant 2023 with an already-productive 2024, JPhono1 (John Harrison) stopped by Live and Local last week to discuss his newest album, “We All Belong to Something Else.”
John Harrison has been a staple of the Chapel Hill music scene for a quarter century, from his early work with the Comas to his still-ongoing run with North Elementary. Recording as JPhono1, he’s released nine albums in the last four years, including 2023’s “Invisible Futures & Make Believe Pasts” – whose opening track, “Fuzzy Peoples,” was our favorite local song of the year (and one of our favorites from any location).
Now he’s back with “We All Belong,” featuring nine songs written during the fall of 2022. Harrison originally wrote the songs as acoustic tracks, but he and producer Alan Weatherhead decided to go in a different direction with the recording – bringing in an all-star cast of musicians to give the songs an even richer sound. Among others, the album’s collaborators include Anne-Claire Cleaver, Nathan Bowles, Rachel Kiel, Matt Southern, Casey Toll, Nathan Golub, Reid Johnson, and Steph Stewart and Mario Arnez of Blue Cactus.
Listen to the album on Bandcamp.
Harrison celebrated the album with a show at the Belltree in Carrboro – alongside Darren Jessee, whose own album “Central Bridge” was also a highlight of 2023. If you missed that show, though, you’ll have another chance to catch JPhono1 live: they’ll be playing at the Cave in Chapel Hill, Saturday, January 27, at 9 p.m. with Country Fetish opening.

John Harrison stopped by Live & Local last week to discuss the album and play three songs, “Gold,” “All Of Me And All Of You,” and “Be A Moon.” Listen:
