Triangle music stalwart John Harrison (JPhono1) returned to Live & Local to celebrate this week’s release of the band’s new album “Beyond Provisional.”
JPhono1 is one of the Triangle’s most prolific bands: “Beyond Provisional” is their sixth full-length album since the start of 2022, and Harrison also released a separate album last year with his other band, North Elementary. This one’s a little different, though: JPhono1’s signature arena-jam sound is there as always, still reminiscent of the best 70s-era rock bands, but this time Harrison and drummer John Crouch are joined by bassist/vocalist Alex Livingstone, who also contributed the photo that graces the album’s cover.
“This is the first album with Alex,” Harrison says, “and that greatly affects things in a three-piece (band)…That was a new component, so that was exciting.”
JPhono1 is Harrison’s project first and foremost – he releases solo albums under the same name – but for “Beyond Provisional,” he says the trio worked together as equal partners.
“I feel like this is (our) most collaborative album,” he says. “This is going to sound funny, but it’s the one that I think sounds most like us as a band… because this is also the first album we recorded in our studio. We wrote the songs in the studio, we recorded the songs in the studio. And then John Crouch mixed the record. So really all three members of the band (contributed) from start to finish.”

Now that the album is out, the band is celebrating with a show at Local 506 on Friday, August 23, with Slow Teeth and Matt Southern & Lost Gold.

John Harrison stopped by Live & Local this week to discuss the album and play three tracks: “Magic Here,” “Midnight Moon,” and “The Eyelids of Smiling Jenny.” Listen:
