Ian Ferguson of Quietknot stopped by Live & Local this week, following the release of his new album “Tough Luck.”
Quietknot is Ferguson’s solo project, and it’s been a productive one: he didn’t start releasing music until 2022, but “Tough Luck” is already his fifth full-length album.
“(I’m always) trying to create a collection of songs that sort of have a story,” Ferguson says. “We’re trying to make songs that felt a bit more meaningful.”
Listen to the album and purchase it on Bandcamp.
With a sound that hearkens back to mid-90s grunge and mid-2000s indie rock, “Tough Luck” is a stellar collection of 10 tracks. Ferguson says their thematic connecting thread is “growing pains” – which is fitting, because he says the album also represents a significant growth for himself as a musician.
“A big thing on this project for me was the drums,” he says. “I just recently started recording my own drums, playing them live – and that has unlocked a whole new world for me, creating new textures and new sounds and exploring different genres.”

And that process is already ongoing: Ferguson says he’s hard at work on his next album, which may be done by the end of this year.
“I’m always writing new stuff,” he says. “Every day I try to record something – and most days it’s not good, it’s bad, but that’s sort of the fun of it. You just, every day, try to record something – and then something good happens and you’re really happy with it.”
Ian Ferguson stopped by Live & Local to discuss “Tough Luck” and play three tracks: “Haley,” “Hogs,” and “Radiation.” Listen:
