Lennon KC came onto the Triangle music scene in 2023 with his debut single “Sabotage,” and he’s been steadily releasing music ever since: “Dream Boy” will be his second album, following 2024’s “Culdesac Kid.”
“There’s definitely a story” to the album, Lennon says. “Themes of cyclical phases, falling on your face and getting back up.”
Given that overall theme, it’s fitting that Lennon approached the album from two seemingly opposite perspectives – carefully planning, but also embracing the accidental.
“I was trying to be very, very intentional,” he says, “(starting) very loose and then refining, refining, refining.”
But amidst the intentionality, Lennon says he’s also been inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “wabi-sabi” – which elevates and celebrates the imperfect, the asymmetric, and the natural.
“It’s been so cool to watch (the album) blossom and unfold,” he says. “I haven’t been fulfilled intrinsically by anything else like this in my entire life. The process of making this album has meant so much to me…
“There were phases where I was hating this album, I yelled at it, I cried with it, I stayed up late with it – and now I get to listen to it whenever I want, and very soon everyone else will too.”
“Manic Pixie Dream Boy” will be out on Friday, March 28 – and Lennon will be marking the release with a show that evening, at the Portal in Raleigh.
Lennon KC stopped by Live & Local to discuss the album and play three songs: “Sedatives,” “All On Me,” and the album’s title track, “Manic Pixie Dream Boy.” Listen:
