“Secondary Gain” is No One Mind’s second album, their first since 2016. The title suggests a double meaning, both musical and psychological: it refers to the ‘gain’ on an amplifier, but it also refers to the advantages or benefits we can get from being sick, benefits that might motivate us to stay that way. (A kid who claims to be ill in order to get out of school, for instance.) Anderson says many of the songs on the album are about characters “attempting to dig themselves out of mourning,” even after they’ve gotten comfortable with that feeling.
The new album comes with an all-new lineup: this time around, Anderson is backed by Reed Benjamin, Sam Logan, and Saman Khoujinian, none of whom were present for No One Mind’s 2016 debut.
“Secondary Gain” officially drops on Friday, and the band will celebrate with an album-release show Saturday, June 10, at PS37 in Durham, beginning at 8:00 p.m. with the band RIBS opening.
Ellis Anderson of No One Mind stopped by 97.9 The Hill this week during Live & Local to chat about the album and play three tracks: “Covered in Roses,” “Golden Enemy,” and the title track, “Secondary Gain.”
