With a new album out Friday, May 13, Kamara Thomas joined Aaron this week on Live & Local!

More than a decade in the making, Thomas’ new album is “Tularosa: An American Dreamtime.” Inspired by her longtime interest in the mythology of the American West – and a chance encounter with one particular book – the album tells the story of New Mexico’s Tularosa region and the people who lived (and clashed) there.

Remarkably, Thomas has never actually visited the area – but that will change this summer, when she heads to New Mexico for a residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute.

The album releases on Friday, the culmination of a recording process that began in 2016. But the music is only part of the Tularosa project: Thomas has also worked to develop theatrical and film performances in conjunction with the music, and that work is still ongoing.

Kamara Thomas joined Aaron on 97.9 The Hill to discuss the album and the journey that led to it. She also played three songs: “Oh Gallows,” “No Peace at Appomattox,” and the album’s title track, “Tularosa.” Listen below:
