In 1970, a then-unknown Chapel Hill musician named Bland Simpson stepped into a New York recording studio to record his debut album. The album, simply titled “Simpson,” came out the following year – and now, Simpson is celebrating its 50th anniversary by releasing a new remastered edition, to raise money for a good cause.
For the first time in decades, “Simpson” is available again, with proceeds from the album going to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Bland Simpson stopped by 97.9 The Hill during Live & Local to chat with Aaron about the album and play a song off it, “Lord, How I Wanna Go Home Again.” (“I did go home again,” Simpson says: after recording the album in New York City, he eventually returned to Chapel Hill for a celebrated musical career with the Coastal Cohorts and the Red Clay Ramblers – not to mention a celebrated academic career with UNC’s English department, which is marking its 225th anniversary this year.)
