Local musician Matty Frank stopped by Live & Local this week, to launch a North Carolina tour ahead of the release of his new EP “Bee Sides.”

“It’s all local shows, all in North Carolina,” Frank says of the upcoming tour. “It’s been nice, because it’s made me feel established in the scene here: people are finally inviting me to play instead of me having to do like all the work, which is lovely.”
Despite that, the tour is a bit of a last hurrah for Matty Frank in North Carolina: he moved to the Triangle from New York City four years ago, and he’s planning to move back later this year.
“I just don’t like driving,” he says with a laugh. “But it’s been amazing to be here.”

Just in the last three years, Frank has established himself as a significant figure in the local music scene. His 2023 single “Wasted” – a catchy pop-rock earworm that doubles as a scathing takedown of conformist frat culture – has been a staff favorite at 97.9 The Hill since its release, and he earned acclaim for his debut album “Dooda” in 2024.
Listen to “Dooda” and purchase the album on Bandcamp.
Now, he’s putting the finishing touches on “Bee Sides” – so named, he says, because “most of the songs are songs that I was going to put on ‘Dooda’ that just weren’t feeling quite right (at the time).” Recorded at Nightsound Studios in Carrboro, the EP is due out later this summer.
But Matty Frank isn’t relaxing between now and then: that North Carolina tour ramps up in a big way with not one but three shows in the next six days (all with a new backup band called the Bobbies). He’ll be at the Cave in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, April 14; then he’s co-headlining with Azul at the Pinhook in Durham on Thursday, April 16, before returning to Chapel Hill to open for Maris at Local 506 on Sunday, April 19.

Matty Frank stopped by Live & Local to chat about the tour and the EP and perform two songs: “Saitama’s Dilemma” and “Feminenemy.” Listen:
