This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint is LaTarndra Strong!

Strong founded the Hate-Free Schools Coalition in Orange County, whose mission is to eliminate racial and ethnic intimidation in the Orange County school system.

In 2016, Strong witnesses Orange High School students openly displaying images of the Confederate battle flag on articles of clothing. She wrote a letter to school leadership, but the meeting that was set up did not result in any decisive action to prevent future displays of Confederate symbols.

So, Strong founded the Hate-Free Schools Coalition.

Coalition members spoke to the school board over many months, but it wasn’t until August 2017 that the school board the board unanimously adopted a new student dress code banning the Confederate flag, Ku Klux Klan symbols and clothing and swastikas from all district schools.
