This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Lydia Lavelle!

Having served as Carrboro mayor since 2013, Lavelle took steps away from working in local government for 14 years by not seeking re-election this year. Newly-elected Carrboro mayor Damon Seils has some big shoes to fill, and Lavelle is this week’s Hometown Hero in recognition of her accomplishments as a long-serving local leader.

Under Lavelle’s leadership, the Town of Carrboro took steps to push back against the controversial House Bill 2 until its repeal and continued to lead the state by passing non-discrimination ordinances to protect LGBTQ community members. During her tenure, she has promoted racial equity and progressive environmental policies to address climate change.
