This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Jemma Boler — along with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta (ΔΣΘ) sorority.

A mural celebrating Black trailblazers and the influence they’ve had on the Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities can be found “where Chapel Hill and Carrboro meet,” and that mural wouldn’t have been possible without Boler or the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Painted by Kiara Sanders, the mural is at 111 South Merritt Mill Road, and features 12 portraits of Black community leaders — including educators, entrepreneurs, religious leaders and public figures.

“You should go and see the site,” said Chapel Hill mayor Pam Hemminger. “You see these wonderful trailblazers, and I’m so pleased with this visual way to share our history with folks.”
