This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by the O. Max Gardner Foundation, is Danita Mason-Hogans.
Mason-Hogans recently took a team of local students across the American south as part of her own nonprofit Bridging the Gap centering on starting conversations based in understanding history. They’ve recorded oral histories, sponsoring exhibits, programs, and public conversations, and hosting a community book club. Bridging the Gap works to uplift local students scholarships, college and exam prep sessions all year, and every summer, a historical education program called the James Cates Scholars. It’s an opportunity for young students across the south to learn about hard fought victories for voting rights and equality. Young students explore history and each year, there’s always a new, fun twist for students to engage in history through. Mason-Hogans took students across the south, visiting historical sites across the South, but they also visited some of the people that helped shape that fight for justice.
